Dump trucks can cause serious injury and fatal accidents
The Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that roughly 3.2% of all annual industrial fatalities are caused in dump truck mishaps, or an average of 347 deaths per year. OSHA has promulgated several rules dealing with how dump trucks are to be equipped, handled, driven, loaded and emptied, inspected, maintained, and more. Yet, injuries and fatalities continue to happen around them. Given their cost, in terms of purchase, operation and maintenance, virtually all dump truck operators place a high premium upon efficiency. But, it is equally important to abide by safety regulations and adhere to safe operation protocols. Being in a hurry, or taking shortcuts, rarely result in significant savings; but they can and often do result in tragedy. Operators should always be aware of the slope of the ground; the location of workers in proximity to the truck; the discharging of cargo at a smooth, measured rate; and, avoiding erratic movements of the bed. Also, drivers should be aware of overhead hazards like fixed obstructions or electrical lines, while the bed is extended. The back-up alarm should always be in good order and operated; and, flaggers should be used wherever possible.
